The Best Technical Mind

He was the Best Technical Mind

The problems that stumped everyone else were the ones he found interesting. He never missed a deadline. Never complained. Showed up early and stayed late because the work genuinely excited him.

The leader assumed he was fine. More than fine. Thriving. Then he resigned.

And in the exit conversation, carefully, diplomatically, a version of the truth came out. The work had stopped feeling like enough. He had been carrying something for months that never had a place to go.

Not because anyone was unkind. Because every interaction was about the task. What needed to get done. What the timeline looked like. What the next problem was.

Nobody had asked how he was doing and actually meant it. In the tech world, emotional intelligence gets a bad reputation. It sounds like feelings over function. Intuition over data. The kind of thing that slows down execution rather than enabling it. Leaders who built their careers on logic and structure often view it as unnecessary, something other people need, not them.

But here is what EQ actually is in practice. It is a diagnostic capability. Think about a parent of young children. They know their kids well enough to notice when something has shifted before it becomes a real problem. The energy is slightly off. The enthusiasm that was there last week is quieter today. Something is different and they can feel it, not because they are being emotional, but because the relationship is close enough to make the signal visible.

That is what a leader with real emotional intelligence can do with their team. They notice the shift. They have the conversation early, when it costs five minutes, rather than late, when it costs a resignation. The transactional leader misses every early signal. Not because they are not paying attention. Because they never built the connection that would make the signals visible.

They find out when find out when it is already expensive.

The technical challenge that excited him at the start was still there. What was missing was the sense that anyone in that building knew him well enough to notice when it stopped being enough.
